One Day Around Tbilisi: Betania, Kojori, Udzo

Looking for a day trip from the capital where you can leave in the morning, see many interesting sights, and return by evening? We got a short list for you. To explore these locations, you’ll need to either rent a car or hire a taxi.

📍 Betania Monastery:

This place is of exceptional beauty, with lilacs along the paths, a blooming garden, green lawns, and towering pine trees. Unfortunately, filming inside is prohibited because the monastery houses one of the four frescoes depicting Queen Tamar, painted during her lifetime and dating back to the 12th century.

The monastery is located approximately 16 kilometers southwest of Tbilisi, in a peaceful, forested area. It is a significant cultural and historical site, known for its 12th-century frescoes. The road leading to Betania is indeed known for its challenging conditions, so caution is advised when traveling there.

📍 Kojori:

Ascend to 1,340 meters up the mountain to breathe cool mountain air and see scenic views, especially during the summer when Tbilisi can become quite hot. Kojori is also known for its historical ruins, such as the Kojori Fortress, which dates back to medieval times. The hikes in this area offer a mix of lush forest trails and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

📍 Udzo:

A secluded and picturesque place high in the mountains, on a slope surrounded by pine trees, where you’ll want to linger. A less-known but beautiful spot, Udzo is perfect for those looking for tranquility and a connection with nature. The area is ideal for picnics, leisurely walks, and simply enjoying the serene environment away from the city’s hustle.

To fully enjoy this route, renting a car or hiring a taxi is necessary, as public transportation options to these locations are limited. This trip offers a perfect mix of historical exploration, natural beauty, and a bit of adventure, making it a great day trip from Tbilisi.
